What happened to the kid friendly Nintendo Square-Soft RPG games of Final Fantasy from 1987 to 1996?

They still make some for the 3DS. Games have grown more complicated over the past 20years and its harder to make "kid friendly" games these days. Based on gameplay alone, thematically their games aren't any more adult than they have aways been. Excepting of course the Eidos games.
