By the time Romulus Augustus (this was his actual name, Augustulus was a

nickname) the western part of the Roman Empire had already lost all of its land outside Italy (Holland south of the river Rhine, Belgium, Germany west of the Rhine, Switzerland, Austria, most of France, Spain, Portugal and north-western Africa) apart form an area of northern France (the Domain of Soissons).

Romulus Augustus was deposed by Odoacer, a Germanic commander of the Roman army. Odoacer led a rebellion of Germanic soldiers allied to the Romans who were stationed in Italy. They were disgruntled because they were refused land grants to settle in Italy. Odoacer became the king of Italy. He claimed to be a representative of the emperor of the eastern part of the Roman Empire, but was actually the ruler of Italy.

Soon after Odoacer seized power in 476, the Domain of Soissons broke all ties with Italy. In 486 the Domain of Soissons was conquered by the Franks. In 488 Zeno, the emperor of the eastern part of the Roman Empire sent Theodoric the Great, the king of the Ostrogoths, to invade Italy and depose Odoacer. Theodoric established the Ostrogothic Kingdom, which covered Italy, south-western France, Austria, western Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and part of Serbia.

The western part of the Roman Empire fell under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. These invaders formed their own kingdoms in its former lands: the Vandals and Alans formed the Vandalic kingdom in Tunisia and eastern Algeria; the Visigoths formed the Visigoth Kingdom in south-western France, Spain and Portugal; the Sueves formed the kingdom of the Sueves in north-western Spain; the Burgundians formed the Burgundian Kingdom in eastern France; the Franksformed the Frankish Kingdom in Holland south of the river Rhine, Belgium, and northern and central France. The Alemanni took over north-eastern France (Alsace) and Switzerland and added them to their homeland in southern Germany (outside the Roman Empire). The Franks then developed the most powerful kingdom. They took over the whole of the Alemannic territories, they pushed Visigoths out of south-western France and they conquered the Burgundian kingdom. Thus, they conquered southern Germany, Switzerland and the whole of Gaul. They also held part of central Germany, which was the homeland of one of their ethnic branches, the Ripuarian Franks.

Italy repelled one attempted invasion and remained intact for longer. Then in 476 the last Roman emperor in the west was deposed by Odoacer, who led a rebellion by the allied Germanic soldiers stationed in Italy. Odoacer styled himself as the king of Italy. The emperor of the eastern part of the Roman Empire, Zeno, sent his ally, Theodoric the Great, the king of the Ostrogoths, to depose Odoacer. The Ostrogoths established their own kingdom, which covered Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and northern and central Serbia.

The Angles, Saxons and Jutes form northern Germany and the Frisians from the north of the Netherlands migrated to Britannia in waves and took it over.
