On September 11, 2001, a group of terrorists hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 carrying 81 passengers and 11 crew and bound for Los Angeles from Boston's Logan International Airport . This plane was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing all on board. A second plane bound from Boston to Los Angeles (United Airlines Flight 175 carrying 56 passengers and 9 crew) was also hijacked and flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. All passengers and 2600 people in the two Towers were killed.

On the same morning, American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757 gonig from Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles and carrying 58 passengers and 6 crew, was hijacked and flown into the Pentagon, killing all on board and 125 people in the building.

A fourth plane, also a Boeing 757, United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark International Airport to San Francisco carrying 37 passengers and 7 crew, was hijacked with a presumed target in Washington, DC. The passengers, however, learned of the other hijackings and attempted to retake the plane. During their struggle, the plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, killing all aboard.
