It depends at which point in time are you asking for. Circa 1500, before contact with Europeans was made, Latin America boasted a population of around 40-60 million. After contact was made in 1492, most populations died of diseases brought by the Europeans themselves, such as smallpox. It suddenly fell to less than 10 million by 1600. It took almost 350 years to regain pre-contact populations (38 million by 1850), when almost all former colonies of Spain, Portugal and France had become independent. Thanks to both the Industrial Revolution (arriving during the early 20th century) and the Green Revolution (1950's), Latin America's population exploded from 74 million in 1900 to 167 million in 1950 and 500 million by the year 2000. Nowadays, the region has a population of approximately 600 million (2014 est.) and is expected to reach 800 million and 900 million by 2050 and 2150, respectively.
