When mills replaced cottage industry it threw a lot of people out of work. A number of them came to America. Now America did not believe in welfare. They had to go to work. The forests around cities had been cut down.

The cities needed heat. The unemployed foreigners got jobs in coal mines. The coal needed to get to cities. New railroads had to be built. Mr. Carnegie built steel mills to provide rails to build those railroads.

Mr. Morse created a code for those railroads to use. People wanted to ride on those rails. Mr. Pullman build railroad cars for them to ride in. People wanted to talk to each other. Mr. Bell build telephones. Mr. Ford build cars.

All sorts of factories sprang up hiring the newly unemployed. The mills paid better than the cottage industry.

As the number of American jobs kept expanding, only a limited number of jobs could possibly exist in Europe. As a result, Europe created all sorts of regulations for its job market. As a result, sure enough, only a limited number of jobs could exist in Europe.
