The main reason is to keep the temple premises clean. In a Hindu temple, as an act of devotion and respect, people kneel down with their hands and head touching the ground (known as Panchanga Namaskaram) or prostrate by lying down on the floor (known as Sashtanga Namaskaram). One would not like to do that on a dirty floor. Also taking of shoes is a normal custom in India in not only temples but also homes. This is out of respect and also appreciating the effort taken to keep the house clean.

∙ 12y agoShoes are belive to have lots of dirt and decay matter attached to their base which can profane the sacred place of god, so that's why Hindu people put off their shoes before entering the temple, also its a kind of respect shown by people to their god.

∙ 11y agoHindu believe in respecting sacred things and as temple is meant as home of god so they did not take any dirty things like slippers, which carry dust of roads, to the temple.
It is to show respect and keep the temple area clean by not carrying any dirt, dust from outside.
In many food or pharma manufacturing industry, there are high hygiene area where every one has to change their shoes (change to the shoe which is used only inside that area) and even cover themselves with an apron or so.

∙ 13y agoThe devotion of those who worship there makes the very building itself an offering to God, which is one reason why Hindus remove their shoes upon entering. Entering holy ground, the removal of shoes is a sign of respect.
