The obligation of Hajj by all good observant Muslims is confirmed by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah. It is further affirmed by the consensus agreement of the Muslim scholars. The consensus agreement states that Whoever denies the obligation of Hajj will be regarded as an infidel, and whoever abandons it because of his indifference to it, though he acknowledges his obligation, is on the verge of disbelief.

After mentioning the obligation of Hajj, Allah says (translated): "In it are Signs manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security; pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah, those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures." (Aal-`Imraan: 97).

The general consensus among Muslim scholars is that Hajj must be done immediately, and it is not permissible for a person who is able to go on Hajj, to the Sacred House of Allah, to delay it. The same applies to all the duties enjoined by sharee'ah: if there is no set time or reason, they must be done immediately. Some scholars even proclaim that a good Muslim, should he be financially able to perform Hajj as a child, should do so.
