This will not hurt the milk, a lot of people buy it in bulk and freeze it. It does have a habit of separating a little when thawing, but allow it to thaw in the fridge and shake when thawed. If freezing a sealed jug of milk, open and pour out a half glass and reseal or during freezing the milk will expand and may burst the container.

it shrinks, since molecules contracts as they get colder.

It actually expands if it has a large amount of liquid. If you want to prove it, fill a plastic container completely full of water and put it in the freezer. When its frozen solid you'll see the lid has popped off.

Milk expands when it freezes because it contains close to 90 percent of water. When milk starts to freeze, the fat will separate from the liquid.
