What happens if the coolant in the overflow tank gets too full because it isn't getting sucked back into the radiator properly in a 1999 Plymouth Neon?

Coolant is pushed out of the radiator and into the overflow tank as it heats up and expands. The liquid is drawn back into the radiator as it cools and contracts. If it doesn't flow back the radiator will only be partly full (at least until the coolant warms fully again). The potentially large air gap left at the top of the radiator leaves metal parts open to corrosion. In extreme cases the engine could overheat.
The fix, easy. Just replace the defective radiator cap and be sure the path from radiator to overflow tank is clean.

: The overflow cap (radiator cap) is on top of the tank that sits on top of the dr. side fender under the hood.some of the newer cars do not have a "radiator cap" it goes in to the overflow tank . i would not suggest using radiator stop leak because it can clog up the radiator and heater core on the car if you must use it only as a last resort.

Depends, do you have a radiator cap on the radiator or is your cooling system ran from the overflow tank? if you have a cap on the radiator then the answer is pretty obvious, open the cap and pour it in. if you don't have a cap on the radiator, then you will have to remove the upper radiator hose to pour the stop leak directly in the radiator. i wouldn't try putting the stop leak in the overflow because it may not all get into the radiator thus making it less effective and could possibly even clog the lines. i had this same question and i finally found the answer so i thought i'd come back and share with you. i have a 1996 3.1 corsica and the radiator has no cap. i was thinking you could pour it in from one of the hose outlets but wasn't sure.

Because engine coolant gets hot. It works through heat exchange - coolant goes through the system, absorbs the heat from the engine, passes through the radiator, then rapidly exchanges the heat to the air which passes through the radiator fins.

Don't worry about it, just close the lid and the automatic filler will prime it eventually. Most newer cars are self-purging. Keep coolant in the overflow tank and it will 'burp' out the extra air once the engine comes up to temperature. When it cools, the system will suck coolant out of the overflow tank to make up for the air that got 'burped' out. You'll know it is working because the coolant level in the overflow tank will drop.
