Symptoms of rectal damage include pain in the anus and rectum and rectal bleeding from the lining. These are rarely life threatening symptoms. Fecal incontinence is another symptom. Fecal incontinence refers to leakage of mucus, blood or stool from the anus.
Small deep wounds can be closed with simple suture. More serious bowel injury should be treated with resection and anastomosis (taking the damaged piece out and then sewing the good ends together).
