the car could run too hot. Water flows more quickly and you get more volume (good) however, it does have to spend a certain amount of time in the rad for heat transfer to take place so if it circulates too quickly it could actually run hotter. Racers replace it with special huge washers and experiment with hole sizes in the center for that very reason. places like Summit, etc. sell them but many race cars don't even run wide open for that reason, at least the ones with radiators that have to go more than a quarter mile.

It's on the passenger side of the engine just behind the block. If you follow the lower radiator hose up it will go right into the thermostat cover.
