The visual problems that you can see are that the wipers hit each other and/or extend past the edge. The first situation can cause expensive damage to motors, linkage, arms and the blades. The second situation can cause damage and decrease performance since the wipers will lift as the hit the trim and they can also sometimes scratch the paint. The problems you can see is the increased load the longer wipers put on the motors, linkages and arms. The manufacturer specificies the lengths for a reason, even it if appears longer ones can be installed.
ALWAYS look up the correct sizes/part numbers by vehcile make, model and year for the brand wipers you decide to purchase. This ensures not only correct length, but also correct attachment.
