It can be a defective starter assembly that causes this problem. There are two parts to a starter assembly: the starter motor and the starter solenoid. The offending culprit is usually the starter solenoid, and it should be replaced.
you need to replace the starter motor
Solenoid could be installed incorrectly. Could be electrical connection on the solenoid. Did you re-connect the battery? Could be a bad starter motor...or a stuck starter motor. Sometimes a light tap or two on the starter motor (not the solenoid) with a hammer will free it up.
For a definitive answer, you're likely going to have to remove the starter and have it bench-tested.Before pulling it out though, clean the wire connections - particularly the big one.See "Related Questions" below for more
Starter motor may not be ok. The starter motor brushes may be worn down to allmost nothing. You didn't say what vehicle you have but another possilbility could be the starter solenoid. Also be sure your battery and battery connections are clean and tight. Have a look at www.carbasics.co.uk There are lots of help articles in their 'how to section'.
It depends on what is wrong - if the starter-motor does not operate it is probably a flat battery (charge it), starter relay (replace it) or starter motor (replace it) - always check for corrosion / bad earths. If the starter-motor is operating but the engine isn't firing it could be any number of things - but for a motor to run it must have: compression, fuel & ignition. The easy answer if your bike does not start is to get in touch with a recovery organisation or motorcycle dealer (such as ourselves: http://www.aprilia-merseyside.com )
Check the starter and your fuses.
Neutral switch Starter solenoid Starter Loose or dirty battery cable
the wire on the little peg is on the wrong one ther should be one directly across put it on that one to engage your starter
It probably needs shims added or subtracted to it. the wrong amount of shims will make it start hard
The teeth on the flywheel have been worn down, this happens when a failing starter is repeatedly used until it quits.
Wrong starter, wrong fly-wheel, Bad starter drive, worn fly-wheel. Starter may need to be shimed.
