I don't have horses now but i did have 6 when i was young and it was my task a few times to catch the horse(s) that got out. I typically lured them to me with a carrot or sugar cubes. This actually works best if you have already established a feeding ritual with these types of foods.
Next time you go to bring your horse sugar cubes or carrots do the following:
- as you approach the pen, get the horses attention and show them the bag of carrots.
- rattle the bag so they hear what that bag sounds like.
- let the horse sniff the opened bag of carrots/ sugar cubes.
- finally, give the horse a carrot or sugar cube.
Taking these steps will cause the horse to associate those SIGHTS, SOUNDS and SMELLS with one of its favorite treats. Before long you will notice that the horse will be giddy with anticipation as soon as it sees the bag you are holding. Use this trick to lure in the escaped horse.
