Aleuts ( the white men ) arrived on the island to hunt for sea otters. After a few weeks of hunting, they killed half the village including the chief, Karana ( main character ) 's father. A new chief was named and he said that they would move to another island because now they're a risk of Aleuts going back to the island and to kill now everyone. So, a ship arrives and brings everyone to the other island. Everyone? No. Karana and her brother are left behind. After a few days, Karana's brother got killed by wild dogs and Karana wants to take her revenge. She survives alone and wants to kill the chief of the wild dogs that she finally adopts after injuring it. She names it Rontu and lives together. Then the Aleuts come back and they have brought a young native girl with them. Her name is Tutok but her and Karana doesn't have the same language. So, they learn their language and becomes friends. But one day, she suddenlydissapears. Worried, Karana continues her life in the woods.
