A mudslide is wet dirt (mud) falling down-words from a hill from a rain. Mudslides can be very dangerous. About 25 people die a year. Mudslides are usually caused by storms, volcanic activity, earthquakes, fires, and humans messing up the land. Ohio, Tennessee, Utah, California, Kentucky, and Puerto Rico usually have mudslides so if you are thinking about moving there you should plan emergency routes. You could also find ways to know when a mudslide is coming, new cracks in tile, brick, plaster, and trees begin to tilt, walls, and stairs pulling away from their structures. Luckily, there are some things people can do to prevent mudslides which is to bury walls around your house, build stronger structures, and put in canals to direct the mudslides.

A geological or meterological disaster in which a large amount of mud separates from its underlying base and moves rapidly down a hill or slope.

Floods and Downslope Creeping

Very wet mudslides are usually the result of heavy rain on steep slopes, which may not have sufficient plant cover to hold the mud in place. Other sources of water (lakes and creeks) can contribute to very soggy mud conditions.

Earthquakes

Dry or wet mudslides can be formed by partial liquefaction of soils during an earthquake.

Lahars

Lahars are massive flows of mud, ash, rock, and debris that can be triggered by volcanic eruptions. The water comes from displaced lakes and streams, and from melting of snow and glaciers.
