When dogs give birth(actually any mammal in the wild) unaided by humans it is natural for them to chew the unbilicial cord, eat it and the afterbirth to add nurishment to their system that aids in the nutrients for nursing. The mother knows just how to ship it off with her teeth. Whatever is left, will dry up in time and fall off.
