It is a serious personal loss. After that, it depends how the person processes the situation and chooses to go forward. Bitterness, sadness, etc. can affect the rest of their life. If they choose another viewpoint, such as realizing that their parents did what they did for their own reasons, they may escape unscathed. Expectations about what should have been get us into trouble everytime.
