Several things could happen. If they were wounded they were, if they were lucky, taken to the hospital. Depending on the wound they could loose a hand, leg, arm, or an eye. Sometimes they died waiting to be helped or of the infection. If the wound was in a vital area they often didn't make it to the operating table. Mass graves were often dug and they were very shallow at times. Reports of hands or legs sticking out of the graves after a rain are told about in letters. Soldiers were afraid that they wouldn't be identified so they sewed their names on their clothing so the family or wife could be told their death. When you have several thousand men dead in one spot the clean up and help for the wounded is often spotty and hit/miss.
