If kidneys stop working, the blood fills up with waste products, which in large quantities are poisonous. You can die from kidney failure unless you do something to clean your blood. The way you can clean your blood if your kidneys have failed is to use a Dialysis machine, which filters blood and does the same work as kidneys.
