The body uses up stores of energy to restore the energy in muscles spent during muscular contractions. Oxygen delivery is also increased as this is used during aerobic reactions, which are the most efficient means of producing energy with either fat or carbohydrate. In absence of oxygen, only carbohydrate can be used as energy, and it is burned less efficiently.

  1. Breathing rate increases to ensure more air inside the lungs and so more oxygen
  2. Heart rate increases to ensure more blood is available to all working muscles and other tissues; this helps in getting more oxygen and more nutrients for energy.
  3. Muscles who actually responsible to create activity in the body contracting and relaxing and they cause movement in the joints; in this process energy is spent.
  4. Brain needs lot of sugar (glucose) every second to function efficiently and this is maintained by blood sugar at 80-120 mg/DL always and this is the responsibility of liver.
  5. Your heart pumps blood through your body at a much quicker pace, which makes you burn more calories/energy.

There are a lot of things that happen when we exercise... if you are doing a cardio exercise, the brain tells the body to perform a specific muscle contraction (lets say jogging) the body releases calcium in the leg muscles to perform a contraction, this contraction is just a single action of a repetitious action that will take place when we perform jogging. The body also needs oxygen to make this contraction so the brain tells the body to take deeper or more air to support the muscle contraction needed to perform the cardio exercise . The increase of air intake will also mean an increase of "pumping" for the heart because it is our blood that brings the air (oxygen) to the muscle that contracts. Now we also have to consider the glycogen (carbs) that was stored by the body, it is use by the body as fuel or energy. Normally the body with use the glycogen for the first twenty minutes then it changes to fat for fuel specially if you are between 60% - 70% of your theoretical maximum heart rate. All these happen from the time you start your first step for jogging...
