As an aircraft climbs above 12,000 Ft altitude, the air becomes thinner and the oxygen level is less and also the pressure decreases. At higher altitudes, the air is too thin to breath enough air for more than a few minutes. Therefore, aircraft are pressurized so that passengers can breath normally. When an airplane experiences sudden depressurization, the air escapes out of the aircraft through some opening and the pressure drops. At 30,000 feet, the passengers would begin immediately to have problems breathing and within a few minutes would pass out. If the aircraft depressurizes suddenly, the air will rush out so fast that it may suck items out of the aircraft and it may cause the thin aluminum skin to rupture. This sudden drop in pressure in one cabin compartment can cause the floor or a wall to collapse. What you see on the movies is a myth when it shows the airplane sucking air out for 5 or 10 minutes. If the hole is big enough to suck out light items, then it will have sucked out all the air in a second or two for the typical passenger jet.
