You lose your bills.
My question pertains to whether or not it is the landlords responsibility to provide a mailbox key (or re-key) of the mailbox, if the previous tenant didn't turn it back. That's an extra expense that I do not believe I should incur.
This happened to me. I went to the Dodge dealership. They looked up my key from the VIN, and made me another key. The key was around $145 and another $50 to program the key to my truck.
The Post Office can rekey the mailbox if the mailbox is owned by the Post Office. All you have to do is call your local Post Office and ask them to rekey. There is a charge, however, of around $50 to do this.
It's most often a mailbox key, but the lock can be fitted for numerous applications.
