How will a car act if the valve stem seals are bad?

If the valve stem seals are bad the intake valves will "suck" oil into the cylinders. One common indicator of worn valve stem seals is to take your foot off the accelerator for several seconds when going downhill, then watch for smoke when you step on the accelerator again. If you see a puff of BLUISH smoke, you probably have bad valve stem seals. The catalytic converter can become oil fouled so that would be another indicator that you might have valve stem seal problems.

What causes oil to be blown out of the exhaust?

bad piston rings or bad valve seals. valve seals are easy but time consuming to replace, while piston rings mean a total engine rebuild. sometimes, you can remove the sump, and get the pistons out from underneath.

How can you identify valve wear problems?

Valve surfaces start to wear as soon as the engine is first started... what happens is a valves will cause a loss of compression, and when one is "burned" you'll have a "dead" cylinder They almost never ALL go bad at once.. If the engine is blowing smoke out the exhaust in the morning, then the valve seals are going bad, and there are additives to help renew the seals... feel free to write with more on how its running.. dave cartalk@fastmail.fm
