There were numerous obstacles early settlers had to endure. First of all, they needed to have as much information about the new environment as was possible. Being prepared for cold winters, high winds or torrential rains could mean a matter of life or death. Next, many of the colonists who headed to America, were not accustomed to planting crops. Growing and harvesting abundant crops were essential, because many settlers perished from starvation. They also needed to make sure there was a nearby body of fresh water. The most difficult obstacle, above all else, were the Native American tribes. The settlers' good relationship with the original people was an absolute necessity for making it in the new world.
