Comments on 'the theme of violence' by Festus Iyayi?

The theme violence actually serves as the title of the book and Iyayi does not just talk about the physical violence of inflicting pain on somebody but the psychological violence most of the characters in this novel goes through. Iyayi, infuses elements of Marxism in this work by showing Idemudia's struggle against poverty life and the society in which he lives. Violence is manifested through hunger, unemployment, poverty and lack of social security. Idemudia, the victim of this state of violence has his life threatened by abject poverty. To survive he has to sell his blood on a daily basis to make a living for he and his family. This represents a great irony because blood represents life, so the selling of it advocates that there is no life to be lived. The violence of the bourgeois and the dictatorship of the government of the day makes life so unbearable. Although this violence does not extend to the high class. Iyayi tries to show the effect of capitalism on the masses and urges the protectorates to fight against the bourgeois.
