Short answer: 2-4 benadryl.

Long answer - Diphenhydramine HCl, the ingredient in normal benadryl (and all the generic pink antihistamine pills) is also sold, under the exact same dosage, as sominex. 50mg should work, and is the max dose recommended by the US FDA. If it doesn't, try taking 4 pills (100 mg). That's the max dose recommended by the Australian equivalent of the FDA.

Unisom tablets are a similar chemical, doxylamine succinate, with many of the same antihistamine and sleep aid properties. It's the stuff in nyquil. 25 mg is the max dose recommended in the US, which is 1 unisom pill. Again, Australia's standards are a bit looser, suggesting 50 mg max dose. Never combine the two.

Some ideas:

  1. A warm shower, a glass of hot milk with some power of Ganthoda, a soporific Indian herb.
  2. To help you sleep, you can drink some warm milk. You should relax in bed for about an hour, maybe watching a bit of T.V or reading a magazine maybe, just so you can get comfortable, before you go to sleep.
  3. Watching movies, reading books, not watching scary movies just before you go to bed
  4. Lay down and completely clear your mind. People have trouble sleeping when they have a lot on their minds.
  5. Try having it pitch black or with a little night light
  6. Try and count back from 100. Boring as heck so it may work
  7. Go drink hot cocoa or hot tea.
  8. Take a hot shower.. hot things always make me tired
  9. Read something boring with no story, like a technical or philosophical book.

Some kind of white noise. They have machines that sound like whales or the ocean or you can use my trick. i use a nice loud box fan turned to the wall (for the noise) I turn it on at night. Eventually your body gets trained to where when you hear that noise it knocks you out and covers up other distractions-try it, it works for me.
