Ontario Highway 17 connects Terrace Bay, Ontario with Wawa, Ontario.
The Movie was "Rituals",starring Hal Holbrook,Robin James,Lawrence Dane...etc, set in the area of Batchewana to Wawa. The Movie's script was written by Ian Sutherland,a playright from Sault Ste. Marie. It's story line: 5 doctors re-unite in the wilderness, [who were part of a MASH Unit in the Korean war]were targeted by a "patient" who sought revenge on them for leaving him a hideous and deranged monster. He picked them off....one by one,in grotesque and sadistic ways. Not a bad movie, but it's debut at the Algoma Theatre in Sault Ste. Marie shocked the small town prudish audience, that cringed in the overuse of profanity and the "F" word. It was filmed at a time when "coarse language" was not accepted in theatres nor television. It was compared to Deliverance,in theatres about the same time.
Wawa Inc.'s motto is 'gottahava Wawa'.
After living in the Wawa/Sault Ste.Marie area for more than 12 years, I can tell you that wildlife is abundant. The area is prime for moose, black bear, beaver, fox, weasels, skunk and porcupine. Ducks geese and grouse are also plentiful. There are a few local farms that raise domestic animals such as cows, horses, pigs, sheep and chickens.
