During the French Vietnam War (1946-1954) Ho's forces where called the Viet Minh (Vietnamese Communists). In the US Vietnam War (1961-1975), "Uncle Ho's" (to the GI's "in-country") forces were called "the NVA" (North Vietnamese Army).
They were a puppet of the US; and not nearly as disciplined as Northerners.

Ho Chi Minh and most of his key leaders were indoctrinated in the Soviet Union and Communist (Red) China. This newly trained "cadre" was then returned to Vietnam, where they trained their fellow countrymen.

The leader of the People's Republic of Vietnam during their wars of independence was Ho Chi Minh. Ho Chi Minh saw through leadership of the resistance against the Japanese, French and ultimately the Americans.
Ho Chi Minh helped the US and allies during WWII against the Japanese who were occupying Indo-China. When Japan left, France returned, and Ho Chi Minh led the Communist Vietnamese forces against the French forces. When France left, the US entered the country, and Ho Chi Minh fought the US.
