What horsepower should you get when buying a home garbage disposal?

Depends on how much you cook and if you'll really use all that hp. Most houses just get a 1/3 hp (standard) Semi customs (1/2 to 3/4).
I recommend a 1/2 or 3/4, you want something with a nice warrenty, 5yr and auto reverse.
I have used InSinkErator for all my projects with no problems.
