Some theologists say that considering the fact that the Islam is a relatively young religion (it was founded in the 7th century, approx. 3,000 years after Judaism and 600 years after Christianity), it is unavoidable and reasonable to assume that Mohammed hatched up several ideas from the other 2 existing monotheistic religions at that time, Judaism and Christianity.

Some examples:

  • Judaism and Islam are known as "Abrahamic religions". Both Islam and Judaism believe in Abraham as their forefather but from there the Islam see themselves as offspring of Ishmael who was Abraham's first son while Judaism believe that Isaac, Abraham's second son, was the chosen one.
  • Both religions are monotheistic (believe in one God only).
  • Both believe in Moses the prophet. In fact, Moses is mentioned in the Qur'an more than any other prophet.

You must understand that around 600 AD most people did not have computers and books as we have today. The only way most learned was to sit and listen to what other taught, either in the synagogs or in the market. Mohammed picked up a lot of the teachings of Christians and Jews as well as those of the Athenian Phlosophia. His doctrine is a mishmash of all three doctrines. Mohammed traced the Ishmalets back to the Old Testament where they were mentioned as sons of Abraham then followed them through historical account to Christ. Although its clear in the text of Genesis 17 and 25 that the seed of Abraham was not to be called in Ishmael, Mohammed took it upon himself to claim that it did. Mohammed changed the meaning of biblical text and wrote his own text where Ishmael became the covenant nation not Isaac.

What ideas did the Muslims borrow from the Jew's and Christin's?

Islam, Christianity and Judaism are known as the Abrahimic religions. They all have similar ideas as they have the same God. Islam believes in Jesus and Moses, but ideas were not borrowed. Islam kept religion as it is, whereas Christianity and Judaism changed their religions to suit society, which is why they seem so different to Islam today. The problem with this would be that they are human laws and are therefore, inevitably not going to be perfect.
