Then Japan would have taken out the United States navy basically. Historically, the most powerful countries are the ones with the most powerful navy. This would make it hard to even fight in the war outside of the US.

Why did the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor to get the US in World War 2?

The military of Japan truly believed that they could control the Pacific and they were trying to do battle while the Allies were distracted with the war in Europe. The military of Japan wanted to expand the Japanese influence and secure more resources and territory. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor hoping to keep the US out of the war thinking that by the time the Pacific Fleet was rebuilt they would have control of all of Asia and we would not have dared to challenge them.

What was the importance of Pearl Harbor?

Pearl Harbor was important because it was the site at which Japanese naval action brought the US into World War 2. Despite Japanese efforts to ensure that war was declared 30 minutes in advance of the surprise attack, communications in Washington DC between diplomats were delayed and the attack came before war was declared. This enraged the US population and ensured a war to "unconditional surrender."

Why did America go to war with Japan?

War occured between these two powers as the result of economic and political rivalry. America had long been the main influence in the pacific and South East Asia, having conquered the Phillipines, Samoa and other smaller pacific territories. The aggressive and imperialistic Japan wanted to achieve the same status in power and prestige as its American neighbour. However, the US would never allow this and in the years leading up to Pearl Harbour, attempted to stem the economic growth of Japan by placing trade tariffs (barriers) of oil etc. Ironically, these actions pushed Japan to seek colonial territories on mainland China, to aquire the resources which US had tariffed. It also brought Japan to the realisation that if it wanted a pacific empire, it would need to confront and defeat America. The rivalry came to its climax at Pearl Harbour, when Japanese bombers attempted to neutralise the US Naval Fleet. With this action, World War Two truly began.

What 2 events started the war?

Well, many experts think that many different events led to the start of World War 2 becoming a truly global war, but most seem to agree on a few. 1. The German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, this caused Europe to go to war. 2. The Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which caused the United States to enter the war. At the time of the Poland invasion, only Europe was at war. By the time Japan invaded Pearl Harbor, Africa, Australia, Asia, and South America were involved in the war. After the U.S. (North America) got in the war, it had turned to a truly global war.

What were the early warning signs surrounding the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan?

There were a number of instances right before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. If noticed and followed up with, part of the damage at Pearl Harbor may have been less than it was. Here are some examples of clues that led to Japan's attack:* An intercepted Japanese telephone message gave pause, as it contained questions about the weather conditions in Hawaii and other suspicious items. At this time, the Japanese fleet was 500 miles away from Hawaii. US General Short was informed of this and decided to "sleep on it". He was not sure what the telephone call meant;* In the early hours of the morning, when the Japanese fleet was 275 miles away, the US minesweeper, the USS Condor spotted a periscope outside of the mouth of Pearl Harbor. The USS destroyer Ward was notified but found no trace of a submarine. Bottom line, nothing was done to truly confirm the sighting. It of course was a Japanese submarine in the wrong place;* Several hours later the USS Ward spotted the conning tower of a submarine. The USS Ward dropped depth charges on it and sunk the submarine. There a fear that the Ward had sunk a US submarine. At this time the first Japanese warplanes, 230 miles away from Hawaii were taking off; and* When Japanese warplanes were 137 miles away from Pearl Harbor, US radar picked up a mass of blips. There were so many, radar operators believed their radar was faulty. later on they were thought to be US planes. A bad mistake.

Why was the battle at Wake Island significant?

For the American people, the news of Pearl Harbor/the loss of the Phillipines was demoralizing. To hear the news of 450 marines, sinking 2 destroyers, heavily damaging 7 other ships and shooting down 20 aircraft, was truly a moral booster.
