When purchasing a used car from a dealer in most cases the sale is considered a purchase in "as is condition". This is where the dealer makes no representation on physical condition or state of repair of the car in question. In most States the buyer will sign paper work agreeing to this at the close of the sale.
This does not mean that the buyer doesn't have any recourse. The needed repairs can be presented to the dealer and assistance may be rendered for customer satisfaction purposes. This is most effective if the Dealer feels they have something to gain as in referral traffic or customer retention for future sales.
