Tree roots in drains gain access via the pipe joints, fractures, cracks and through inspection chamber walls and benching. The majority of the drainage systems within the UK are constructed from collar and spigot vitrified clay pipes jointed using sand & cement, these joints offer little resistance to fine tree roots.

Condensation that naturally occurs on the outer wall of the drain pipe, or moisture from leaking drain joints attract tree roots looking for a good nutritious feed. Disturbed ground, trenches and house foundations make easy travelling for a root system compared to the adjacent undisturbed ground.

Tree root ingress is one of the biggest causes of blockages in the UK. For this reason, we recommend that you have your drains thoroughly investigated with a pre-purchase survey before buying a new house. Drains close to any disturbed ground, trees or hedges are particularly vulnerable.

If you are facing any drainage issues like tree root intrusion, rats, blocked drains, drain maintenance and more then its better that you contact drainage professionals. You can put root killer in the drain, Copper Sulfate. This is supposed to kill the roots but not hurt the tree.

What is the cause of sewer backup when all vents and drains and sewer lines are clear?

You may not have a backflow preventer in the main line. This prevents anything coming back from the main line. It may be coming from your neighbors above you on the line.

Why would a basement floor drain bubble up water when the water is turned on upstairs or the toilet is flushed upstairs?

It is quite possible that your main pipe to the city sewer system has become blocked somewhere between the basement floor drain and the man city sewer line. Could be a result of items flushed down the toilet(s), or damaged pipes as a result of age, tree roots searching for water, etc. Suggest having your main access to the city sewer system checked by camera.

Who owns a drain connection between the property boundary and the main sewer?

The property owner is totally responsible

Why would both toilets in the house be overflowing when flushed?

The drain pipe has a blockage somewhere downstream from where the toilets are connected to the main sewer line from the house. All the drains in a house normally connect to one main line that either goes to the city sewer system or your septic tank. If you know where the sewer line exits the house, you could check there to see if the blockage is in the yard. Most sewer blockages are caused by tree roots, broken fittings, or crushed pipes. Good Luck

Why is sewer water coming out of a pipe in your backyard?

A 3 or 4 inch pipe sticking straight up out of the ground? This is the clean out for the sewer line. If sewage is coming out of it, this means the sewer line is clogged or collapsed from there to the main city sewer. If you have a septic tank, the tank is full and needs to be pumped out.

Hwy when you flush your upstairs toilet does your downstairs shower drain erupt sewage?

The drain from the toilet to the main drain is plugged and the branch to the shower is not. If the main floor toilet flushes, it is between the two toilets and not between the house and the sewer.
