Once it is hot, it should not cool off once you roll it into the wall slot (dumbwaiter). Roll the cannonball over, wait for it to heat, then pick up the fireplace Poker (rod) to push it left into the wall slot. Then you can pull the switch in the laboratory to move it.

Nothing at all. Whether you pull the switch with the red knob or not, pushing a red-hot cannonball into the wall slot will lock it into place. You cannot put a cold cannonball in it. And you can only pull the other switch (in the laboratory) once there is a ball in the dumbwaiter.
