Some exes can be friends, but it usually takes some time lapse before this occurs. Both people need to have moved on; they're no longer interested in a relationship with eachother.
The problem with being friends immediately after a breakup is that it's often used as way of clinging on to hopes that they can renew a relationship with an ex at some point down the road. Instead of moving on, they invest time and attention into the ex, trying to read meaning into their words and actions, becoming hurt and resentful when the ex displays interest in and starts dating other people. It doesn't mean you should hate your ex or totally cut him from your life, but it's not a bad idea to give yourself some space right now so that you don't fall into this loop. When you do run into your ex from time to time, let him see the best of you--but don't put your life on hold for this man.
