The thermostat and reservoir will have nothing to do with this situation since you have (ATC) Automatic Temperature Control and you most likely will have a bad sensor or control head, its best to have the (ATC) unit scanned for all issues........
On a 1998 Lincoln Continental : The thread on cap on your engine coolant reservoir is the pressure cap / radiator cap . The engine coolant reservoir is in your engine compartment , towards the passenger side of the engine compartment
Since the 1995 only had one engine size, you will find access to the thermostat under the car behind the passenger side wheel well. Follow your long lower hose to the passenger side and then up :-)
It is under the power steering reservoir and can be removed by removing two bolts. It has three hoses going to it

Where is the thermostat on a 2001 Lincoln LS?
I'm not a mechanic / technician but I believe if the engine coolant reservoir has a screw on pressure cap / radiator cap it is called a Degas Bottle . In the case of the 1999 Lincoln Continental , the engine coolant reservoir is in the engine compartment ( on the passenger side of the vehicle )
The windshield washer fluid reservoir is located in the passenger side of the engine compartment between the Power Distribution Box and the front of the 2001 Lincoln LS

AnswerOn 1998, 4.6 32 valve engines, the thermostat is located in the radiator to block hose. if you look directly under the power steering reservoir you should see it.The thermostat has 3 hoses running from it. 2 are approx. 1.5" in dia. and one is approx .750" in dia. The .750" hose leads up to the coolant reservoir. and yes it is under the power steering reservoir. Access to the thermostat is from the bottom side. You will need an 8mm socket to remove the two bolts. Removal of the bottom radiator hose is mandatory.
