Hrm. What you describe COULD be the inner workings of a music box. That's how a music box works-- a rotating steel plate with bumps that strikes tuned metal strips that make sound. Each box is different so it would be difficult to match it with it's box unless the name of the manufacturer is on the disk.
Also, *some* player pianos work that way. I forget what the "disks" used are called, but they are a round metal tube covered with bumps. They tend to be pretty big, though. Each brand had a propriatary shape. Does this help?
