Rural poverty was a big thing in the south, when they made their yearly profit, it went towards paying off last years debt. This led most people into a vicious cycle of debt.
Rise of Merchants:
Stores in the south sprang up around plantations to sell supplies on credit, which made these new merchants a lot of money. Many landlords ran their own stores and forced their tenants to buy there at high prices.
