The major accomplishment of his presidency was his peaceful resolution of the Quasi-War crisis with France (1798-1800) but also the expansion of the US Army and navy. Adams signed the four controversial Alien and Sedition Acts which included restrictions on the freedom of speech and the press.
He was unable to maintain his popularity, and became the first one-term President of the US (1797-1801) when defeated by Thomas Jefferson in 1800.
John Adams was not a very good president. He did not think of the country or the people first. He only thought of his political party and how certain things would benefit him. He passed the judiciary acts just before he left office, establishing last minute judgeships that he gave to other Federalists, giving the federalists an upper hand in the judicial branch. In addition, John Adams passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, "designed to crush the opposition" so that he would win the next election
