There is a focus in knowing the curriculum to meet federal guidelines using the common core. In some cases this is good, but some of us teach in communities where the focus needs to be on the needs of the individual student. Many are not special needs students, but there were steps in their academic background that are lacking due to circumstances or because of comprehension issues. The federal expectations want everyone to learn in the same manner and it is not possible, therefore, common core expectations are higher than many of our students.
