The area west of the river Rhine, in southwestern Germany, was part of the Roman Empire. Southern Germany up to the Roman fortification line from the Rhine to the Danube was also part of the Roman Empire for a period of time. The line started to the northwest of Mainz, turned southwards to the east of this city and then turned eastwards until it reached Regensburg (in Bavaria) where it joined the Danube. The Romans also traded with Germanic peoples north of the boundaries of the empire. However, some Germanic peoples carried out many raids into northern Gaul, destroying its economy. They also forced the Romans to abandon southern Germany east of the Rhine and took it over. Therefore, although the Romans did have an influence on these peoples, the Germanics who lived in what is now Germany were also keen on asseritng their identity and on expanding their territories.
