The innovation that will make it safer for trains to stop is Positive Train Control (PTC). This is GPS-based safety technology that has the ability to prevent train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, unauthorized incursion into work zones and train movement from switches left in the wrong position. PTC monitors and, if need be, controls train movement in case human error occurs. PTC may also bring trains to a safe stop if there is a natural disaster.
