Many crickets, frogs, cicada, owls, etc.. can make loud clicking noises at night. It's that sound you hear on a hot southern night that can put you to sleep. BUT, what happens when you hear a "clicking" noise that is out of the norm?
This is a LOUD click 20-30 times over and over, not in three's (it almost does not sound like it could be from an animal; more like a machine, but it is not)!
I would appreciate a response that makes sense i.e. it's not a cricket or a cicada (even when cicada have a specific call, this is not what I am talking about).
Possibly certain species of owls at certain times of year? bats? snakes?
There are many different types, but the two most common are crickets and cicardas. Insects that make such noises usually do so by rubbing their hind legs or wings together, depending on the type of insect. Most use this as a method of communication with which they attract/find a mate.
The Cicada makes the loudest noise, which can achieve up to 120dBs of sound.

The screeching noise is most likely the blower motor. Either the motor itself is bad or the fan blades are striking the housing. Run the heat without defrost and see if the noise is the same. Also check at different fan speeds to see if the noise changes.

The cause of a loud screeching noise when a person turns the wheels a little, could be due to the lack of power steering fluid. It could also be due to worn belts.
