That depends on alot of things... first of all, if you play any instrument, that narrows the odds down alot. Becoming a musician is ultimately the process of any other career, you work with your tools ( instrument) and essentially learn what's needed to become successful. If you intend of writing music, you'll need to learn that. Anyone can be a musician, not everyone will be a FAMOUS musician.
A musician that plays an instrument requires a solid education in music. Musician need years of training to become proficient in the specific instrument. This training can include learning music theory, music composition and production, and instrumental instruction.

I play by ear. You can't really learn how to play by ear. It's something you have and must learn to develop. All you need is an instrument you love and an experienced musician for a little boost.

you need to able to read music and to play whatever instrument you're playing - well.
First you need to know how to play an instrument; then you can hopefully create your own music, write it, and perform it. All of these qualities are classified as a musician. Now, having a degree in music is different.
