Sir Joseph Wilson Swan (31 October 1828 - 27 May 1914) was a British physicist and chemist, most famous for the invention of the incandescent light bulb for which he received the first patent in 1878. His house (in Gateshead, England) was the first in the world to be lit by a lightbulb, and the world's first electric-light illumination in a public building was for a lecture by Swan in 1880. In 1881, the Savoy Theatre in the City of Westminster, London was lit by Swan incandescent lightbulbs, which was the first theatre, and the first public building in the world, to be lit entirely by electricity.[1]

In 1904, Swan was knighted by King Edward VII, awarded the Royal Society's Hughes Medal, and was made an honorary member of thePharmaceutical Society. He had already received the highest decoration in France, the Légion d'honneur, when he visited an international exhibition in Paris in 1881. The exhibition included exhibits of his inventions, and the city was lit with electric light, thanks to Swan's invention.

When did Isaac Newton invent the light bulb?

I'm sorry to say that he didn't In 1878 Joseph Wilson Swan, an English physicist and Chemist received a patent for his invention and his house was the first in the world to be lit by electric light. See Swan's Wikipedia entry Thomas Edison, upon seeing the British patent,or open letter, made copies and publicised his work. Swan was keen to make money from his invention and decided set up a joint venture which became the 'Ediswan' company in 1883. I am sure the name Swan would not have figured in the name unless Edison was forced to retract his claim of prior invention. Edison did produce an efficient steam driven DC dynamo known as' Long Waisted Annies' to drive his lamps and famously lit the road out side his workshop. This the likely source of your error.

When was the light bulb discovery made?

It depends on what you would classify as the actual invention of the light bulb. Humphry Davy first invented an electric light in 1800, which consisted mainly of a battery and carbon. In 1878, Sir Joseph Wilson Swan created new, longer-lasting electric lamps, which he showcased in England. Thomas Edison, after working with thousands of different prototypes, discovered the light bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours, laying the foundation for light bulbs today.

What are facts about the invention of the light bulb?

The light bulb was made in the early 1800's but Thomas Edison. People say that Mr. Edison had really not made it like in a story but is it true? We just gave the credit to Thomas because he had owned a power company, General Electric. Joseph Swan was a British inventor; Joseph's Light bulb was prior one year after Thomas Edison had made his light bulb. Swan's and Edison's were the same. Swan had shown his light bulb to the New Castle, England at 10 years before Edison had 'shocked' the world that he had mad the first light bulb. How do two inventors, from two different countries, invent the exact same thing? This part is easily, This web site, that told me, that Edison had read an article about Swan's light bulb, Swan had didn't like this. He had taken this to court, but in the end, Edison had to share this company, Edison and Swan United Electric Company. Today, Edison only, made that 50-year-old idea improved it, the idea of electric lighting wasn't new, and a number of people had tried worked on, and even developed ways of electric lighting.
