Napoleon Bonaparte is commonly cited as an example. However, Napoleon wasn't actually short by the standards of his time: his height was, naturally enough, reported in French units, which makes him sound short: 5'2" in French units is about 5'6" in English units, which in 18th Century Europe was right around average height. It also didn't help that Napoleon surrounded himself with his Elite Guard, most of whom were well over six feet tall, making himself look short by comparison.

This term is also known as Napoleon syndrome, Short Man syndrome, and Small Man syndrome. The Napoleon complex is named after French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
