The Ancient Greeks are known for being the founders of western philosophy. Many of the questions about morality, existence and "What is the basic stuff that makes up everything (atoms)" were first asked by the ancient Greeks. Also, many of the words we use are directly rooted by the ancient greek language.
Ex: Philosophy Philo = Love Sophy/Sophia = Wisdom
So Philosophy literally means " The love of wisdom"
They did so for the same reason that anyone would search for truth - to understand the world a bit better and because it's fascinating to think about. In a world with so much change and inconsistency, it is almost comforting to think that underlying all of this chaos is some notion of truth. And as human beings gifted with sentience, questioning our established beliefs in an attempt to discover the truth may be a worthwhile thing to do. It's a rewarding pursuit, and not just for Greek philosophers - the truth can affect the legal system, the sciences, and how we act as human beings. Many professions today, such as those in the sciences, also pursue this search for the truth.
Well... Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence.
The goals was to know the basis of happiness and the truth leads to a happy ending
