President Obama is a moderate Christian. He was raised mainly by his mother, a non-religious Christian (his father, a non-practicing Muslim, abandoned him when the future president was only two), and his maternal grandparents, who were also Christians. Obama went through a period of time when he was not very religious at all. But like many people who marry and have a family, he wanted his kids to have a religion of some kind.

Before he became president, Obama attended the church of a Chicago pastor, Jeremiah Wright, who would later be considered very controversial and in 2008, was the subject of some political attacks by the president's opponents. But the president seems to have found that church to be welcoming, and it was Rev. Wright who conducted the wedding when Obama married Michelle. The president has said in his writings that attending Rev. Wright's church helped reconnect him with his Christian faith. He has also said that he believes in prayer, and he tries to follow the ethical teachings of Christianity. And although he considers himself a mainstream Christian, he has friends from all religions and cultures, as does his wife Michelle (who even has a rabbi among her cousins).
