Samuel de Champlain explored the eastern shores of Canada in 1603. He traveled across Canada, mapping the Great Lakes region. Champlain died in Quebec in 1635, the town that he founded for France.

Very little is known about Samuel de Champlain's birth or early years. Estimates of the year of his birth range from 1567 to 1580. It is generally thought that Champlain was born in or near Brouage, France, but there is no clear evidence of this. Likewise, there is no clear record of the death of either of Champlain's parents.
